Summer Boating Safety: Stay Cool, Stay Safe, Stay Afloat
Posted by Justin Gratton on 8th May 2025
Summer’s here, and that means long days, warm water, and endless opportunities to hit the lake, river, or ocean in your favorite boat. But while you're chasing sunsets and casting lines, don’t forget the one thing more important than fun: safety.
Whether you're a seasoned captain or a weekend warrior, brushing up on boating safety is never a bad idea. Here are some essential tips to help you and your crew stay safe out on the water this summer.
1. Wear a Life Jacket—No Exceptions
This one’s a no-brainer. Everyone on board should have a properly fitted U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket—and yes, that includes adults. Accidents can happen fast, and wearing a life jacket dramatically increases your chance of survival in the water.
2. Check the Weather Before You Launch
Summer weather can turn on a dime. Check the forecast before you head out and keep an eye on the skies. Sudden storms, strong winds, or high waves can catch even experienced boaters off guard.
3. Don’t Leave the Dock Without a Safety Checklist
Before every trip, go through a quick safety checklist:
-
Fuel levels topped off
-
Engine and electronics working properly
-
Fire extinguisher and flares onboard
-
First aid kit stocked
-
Navigation lights functional
Trust us—it’s worth the extra five minutes.
4. Boat Sober
It might be tempting to crack open a cold one on the water, but alcohol and boating don’t mix. Operating a boat under the influence is dangerous and illegal—and the penalties are serious. Designate a sober driver and save the drinks for the dock.
5. Bring a Communication Device
Always have a reliable way to call for help. A fully charged cell phone in a waterproof case is good, but a marine VHF radio is even better—especially in areas with spotty reception.
6. Know (and Follow) the Rules of the Water
Just like on the road, boating has its own “rules of the road.” Know the navigation markers, right-of-way rules, and local speed limits. If you're not sure—take a boating safety course! Many are available online and often only take a few hours.
7. Keep an Eye on Your Crew
If you’re bringing kids, new boaters, or pets onboard, make sure they’re comfortable and secure. Assign everyone a “buddy” to watch out for each other, especially if someone goes swimming or sits on deck.
8. Stay Hydrated and Sun-Safe
The combo of sun, wind, and water can sneak up on you. Drink plenty of water, wear sunscreen, and bring a hat and sunglasses. Dehydration and sunburn are common on the water—and easily avoidable.
Final Thought:
Boating should be fun, relaxing, and safe. By taking a few simple precautions, you can avoid common accidents and make the most of your summer adventures.
So load up the cooler, grab your gear, and enjoy the ride—but always keep safety at the helm. ?☀️
